A square occurs when two planets are 90° apart, creating friction and tension. Unlike the flowing trine, squares demand action and create internal or external conflict. They represent the areas of life where growth comes through struggle and effort. While uncomfortable, squares are powerful catalysts for change. T-squares (two planets in opposition with a third squaring both) concentrate this energy at the apex planet.

In a chart, Moon square Mars creates a volatile emotional temperament — this person reacts quickly, may have a sharp temper, and struggles to sit with uncomfortable feelings. However, this same aspect produces incredible emotional courage and the ability to fight for what they care about. Venus square Pluto generates intense, obsessive relationship dynamics — passionate but prone to jealousy and power struggles. A common misconception is that squares should be avoided or 'overcome.' They are actually the engine of the chart — without squares, there is little motivation to grow, achieve, or change.
