An opposition occurs when two planets sit directly across the chart from each other (180°). This creates a tug-of-war between two competing needs or drives. Oppositions often manifest through relationships — you may attract partners who embody the opposing planet's energy. The key to working with oppositions is integration: finding a middle ground rather than swinging between extremes.

For example, Venus opposite Saturn in a chart creates tension between the desire for love and pleasure (Venus) and the fear of rejection or need for control (Saturn). This person might alternate between craving intimacy and pushing people away, or they might attract partners who are emotionally unavailable. In transit, an opposition from Jupiter to your natal Moon can bring emotional excess — overindulging, overpromising, or feeling torn between expanding outward and staying in your comfort zone. A common misconception is that oppositions are purely negative. They actually create awareness because the two poles are visible to each other (unlike squares, where the tension is blind). Oppositions can produce tremendous balance and objectivity once integrated. Many great leaders and mediators have prominent oppositions. For chart interpretation, oppositions reveal the fundamental polarities in your life — the areas where you must learn to hold two truths at once rather than choosing sides.
